Some important aspects of the play environment are;

-Having open ended materials like Lego, blocks, and play dough help foster learning because the possibilities of creation are endless.

-Providing a flexible space. This is particularly important because a changing room keeps the children interested in the new layouts of the room, and new activities they can do. It also gets them used to change.

-Making it a gender neutral space-all sorts of toys, the colour of the object does not determine who gets to play with it. ie) blue for boys, pink for girls

-Having natural elements like plants, and windows that let in a lot of natural light.

-Provide symbolic representation. Things like pictures, words, drawings.

-Having the space have a cozy, homelike feel. When children are a part of a room that has a cozy and comfortable feel to it, they will feel more at home, and be able to become involved deeper in their play.

-Making objects that provoke curiosity and wonder accessible to the children. For example, set up an overhead projector in a corner of the class room and have children put different colour objects onto the screen to see what they look like with light shinning through them.
