Before my ECE program began at Conestoga College I checked what classes I had like any other student would do.
When i saw 'Foundations of Curriculum' i wondered to myself
"What the heck is that?"
This thought than prompted me to think about what i thought curriculum was.
Based on my small amount of knowledge i already had about curriculum, i came to the conclusion that curriculum was just what you were taught each year. That big binder you see sitting on your teachers desk everyday of things that you'll be learning for the whole year. I assumed that day cares and early learning centers would be the same. I though this until i found out that the curriculum between preschool and middle school were so very much different.
Obviously i knew the difference between preschool classes and elementary classes, but i hadn't realized just how different they really were.
Up to the point of my program beginning, i had never heard of play based learning, or child-centered learning. This was all foreign to me.
It wasn't until we discussed this in class that i truly realized just how amazing play based learning really is. I never realized children could learn so much, just by playing!
When i came to this revelation, i was very excited to have learned something completely new, I just had to tell someone. I decided to talk to my Granny about it.Unfortunately, I got ahead of myself before i completely understood what play based learning really was.
I made one of the best things I've learned, sound completely ridiculous! *oopsss!
(I had tried to explain Reggio Emelia, and how the students directed their learning, and not the teachers)
Needless to say, this did not turn out very well. I think i managed to turn my Granny completely off of the idea.
I have a much better understanding of everything now, and hopefully i can tell my Granny about how awesome play based learning really is, and make it sound good.
